Launching LSASA: Building a Safer Future for High-Power Laser Displays in South Africa

The Laser Safety Association of South Africa (LSASA) is proud to officially launch its website and begin the next phase of developing a more structured, professionally managed, and safety-focused laser industry within South Africa’s live events and entertainment sector.

Over the past decade, high-powered laser systems have become increasingly common across concerts, festivals, sporting events, corporate productions, broadcast environments, nightclubs, exhibitions, and large-scale entertainment activations. Modern laser technology has evolved rapidly, with systems now capable of producing significantly higher output powers and increasingly complex visual effects.

While these technologies create incredible visual experiences, they also introduce a level of operational and safety responsibility that is often misunderstood or underestimated within the broader events industry.

Unlike conventional lighting fixtures, Class 3B and Class 4 laser systems require specialised operational procedures, controlled beam zoning, emergency stop systems, key-controlled enable systems, software-based safety controls, airspace awareness, and continuous oversight by suitably qualified personnel.

In many cases, laser systems are deployed within live environments without a complete laser-specific safety structure in place. General production safety files often do not adequately address the unique risks associated with high-powered laser systems, particularly within outdoor or large-scale public environments.

LSASA was established to help bridge this gap.

As an independent non-profit industry body, LSASA aims to assist event organisers, venues, festivals, technical production companies, operators, Laser Safety Officers, and importers in implementing safer and more standardised approaches to laser deployment within South Africa.

The objective of LSASA is not to restrict creativity or production value. On the contrary, the goal is to help ensure that high-powered laser systems can continue to be used safely, responsibly, and professionally as part of world-class entertainment productions across the country.

The launch of the LSASA website marks the beginning of a broader industry initiative focused on:

  • Laser safety awareness

  • Standard operating procedures

  • Operational guidance

  • Laser-specific documentation

  • Industry best practices

  • Safety accountability

  • Improved operational consistency

The website will continue to expand over time and will serve as a central resource for industry stakeholders looking to better understand the safe operation of Class 3B and Class 4 laser systems within entertainment environments.

As part of the initial rollout, LSASA is also introducing a range of operational resources, application frameworks, safety documentation structures, and informational guidance intended to help support safer deployments throughout the industry.

We believe that collaboration between operators, venues, organisers, suppliers, and relevant authorities is essential to building a safer and more professionally managed laser industry in South Africa.

This is only the beginning.

Welcome to LSASA.
